252 Vaishnav Varta 195 - Mother and Daughter of Rajnagar

Now the sentiment of the account of Shri Gusainji’s female sevaks, the mother and daughter of Rajnagar, is being explained.

Bhav Prakash (Revealing the Sentiment): These both are sattvic devotees. In the divine play, their names are “Sushuma” and “Ratikida.” Know that “Sushuma” manifested as the mother and “Ratikida” as the daughter. Both manifested from “Umashankar,” therefore they are of his emotional form.

Prasang 1 – The Mother and Daughter’s Simple Service At one time, Shri Gusainji was residing at the house of Bhaila Kothari in Rajnagar. All the people of the village used to come there for darshan. Among them, the mother and daughter also came for darshan. Then Shri Gusainji said regarding the daughter: “This girl is fortunate.” Then the old mother said: “Maharaj! Since you have said so, she will indeed be fortunate.” Then Shri Gusainji bestowed the Name upon them. On the following day, he gave Brahmasambandh initiation to both of them.

Afterward, he said: “Perform seva.” They replied: “Maharaj! How can seva be done? We have nothing at all.” Then Shri Gusainji said: “Do you prepare dal and roti at home?” The mother replied: “Yes, Maharaj! We prepare dal and roti at home.” Then Shri Gusainji instructed: “Offer dal and roti as bhog. But first install Shri Thakurji.” Then they asked: “Maharaj! What should we offer at Mangala, at Banta, and at Utthapan?”

Shri Gusainji replied: “You have bajra in your home, do you not?” They replied: “Yes, Maharaj! We do have bajra in our home.” Then he said: “Soak one handful or two handfuls of it. Offer that at Mangala, Utthapan, and Banta.” Then they asked: “Maharaj! From where shall we bring garments?” Shri Gusainji replied: “You wear a sari, do you not? Tear off one hand-length from it beforehand. Make garments from that.”

Then they said: “Maharaj! Very good. Please bestow your grace and install Shri Thakurji for us.” Then Shri Gusainji granted the order, and they began performing seva according to those instructions. Some time later, Shri Gusainji again came to Rajnagar on his sixth visit. He had set out to visit the home of a Vaishnava. While proceeding on the way, he heard the ringing of a Ghanta-naad. Then he asked: “Does any Vaishnava live here?” They replied: “Maharaj! A mother and daughter live here.”

Then Shri Gusainji said: “We shall go to their house.” Out of grace, he went to their home. Afterward, he asked: “What time of service is it now?” They replied: “Maharaj! The Utthapan bhog has been offered.” Then Shri Gusainji went and looked. There he saw that Shri Thakurji Himself was eating the grains of bajra. With both hands he was picking up the grains. Seeing this, Shri Gusainji’s heart overflowed with emotion.

Then he came outside and sat down. Afterward, he instructed the old mother: “When the bhog is completed, bring the Mahaprasad here.” The old mother completed the bhog and brought the Utthapan bowl and placed it into Shri Gusainji’s sacred hands. Then Shri Gusainji asked the Vaishnavas: “Do you have dealings with these people?” They replied: “No, Maharaj, we do not.”

Then Shri Gusainji said: “But we do.” Saying this, he placed the bajra grains into his own mouth. Then the Vaishnavas said: “Maharaj! Please bestow some upon us through your grace.” Then, out of grace, he distributed it to everyone. Its taste was extraordinarily divine. Then Shri Gusainji said: “Now have they become fortunate?”

The old mother replied: “They became fortunate because you made them so.” Afterward, Shri Gusainji departed from there and went to the house he had intended to visit. Then he returned to the house of Bhaila Kothari. Thus Shri Gusainji always bestows grace upon Vaishnavas who possess nothing.

Bhav Prakash (Revealing the Sentiment): The intention of this account is that a Vaishnava should never remain without performing seva under any circumstances. Even if one possesses nothing, one should perform seva like this mother and daughter. Through this, humility and true servitude are established. Then the Lord grants direct experience in this manner, and the Vaishnava becomes truly fortunate. This is what is being demonstrated here.

These mother and daughter were such recipients of Shri Gusainji’s grace and such Bhagavadiya devotees. Therefore, how much can be said of their glory?
