252 Vaishnav Varta 203 - The Son of the Sevi Brahmin of Kashi

The Devotional Account of the Son of a Sevi Brahmin from Kashi, a sevak of Shri Gusainji, is now narrated along with its inner devotional meaning.

Bhav Prakash (Revealing the Sentiment): This devotee belongs to the tamas category of devotees. In the divine lila, her name is Sonjuhi. Her divine identity has already been described later in the account of Parmanand Swami. She manifested from Krishnavati, and therefore this is her eternal devotional form.

Prasang 1 – The Silent Child Who Remembered His Previous Birth The Sevi Brahmin had no children for a long time. When this son entered the womb of the Brahmin's wife, the child experienced deep repentance. The reason was this: whenever a soul enters the womb, it remembers the experiences of its previous hundred births. Thus this child remembered his previous birth and thought within himself: "Shri Acharyaji Mahaprabhu had accepted me as His own. Through His grace, Shri Navneetpriyaji showed me great affection. Yet, because of my greed for the taste of food and the craving of my tongue, I committed an offense. As a result, I have now taken birth in the house of one who follows another path. Therefore I must undergo this birth. I shall remain mute. I will not speak."

When the child was born, he did not cry or speak. Whether he was given milk or not, he remained completely silent. His parents were Sevi Brahmins. According to their understanding of the Vedas and Shastras, they constantly reflected: "Our son never asks for anything. Because of that, he does not seem to grow properly. Even if other children are mute, they still cry when they are hungry and ask for milk. But this child neither cries nor speaks." Thus the Brahmin remained constantly worried.

When the child completed one year, the Brahmin invited the Brahmins of his community for the first birthday ceremony and began performing the customary worship. Holding the child in his lap, he was sitting during the ceremony. Suddenly, the child took a deep sigh and spoke a single phrase: "Shri Acharyaji Mahaprabhu." After saying only these words, he again became completely silent. The Brahmins present said to the father: "Your son has spoken a Sanskrit word, but we do not understand whose name he has taken."

The following year, during his second birthday, the Brahmin again invited the community of Brahmins and performed the worship. This time the child spoke two names: "Shri Acharyaji Mahaprabhu" "Shri Gusainji" Again he became silent. In the third year, he spoke three names: "Shri Acharyaji Mahaprabhu" "Shri Gusainji" "Shrinathji" In the fourth year, he spoke four names: "Shri Acharyaji Mahaprabhu" "Shri Gusainji" "Shrinathji" "Shri Navneetpriyaji"

Then his father said to him: "My son, I have no other children. You alone have been born in my house. You have knowingly chosen to remain mute. Every year you speak only one additional word. Whatever is in your heart, tell me. I shall do it." The boy traced letters upon the ground and wrote: "Take me to Shri Gokul. Then I shall speak." The Brahmin therefore took his wife and son to Gokul. After arriving, he said to the child: "Now go wherever you wish."

The child immediately went and sat on the bank of Shri Yamunaji at Shri Thakurani Ghat. His parents also sat there. Whenever someone came to draw water for Shri Navneetpriyaji or whenever any Vaishnav arrived at the ghat, the child would ask: "What is the present time of service for Shri Navneetpriyaji?" "Where is Shri Gusainji seated?"

The water-carriers and sevaks wondered: "This is the son of a Sevi Brahmin. How does he know everything about this place?" Meanwhile, Shri Gusainji completed offering Rajbhog to Shri Navneetpriyaji and came to Shri Govind Ghat. The Vaishnavs told Shri Gusainji everything about the boy. Smiling, Shri Gusainji asked: "Where is he now?" They replied: "Maharaj, he is sitting at Thakurani Ghat." Shri Gusainji instructed them: "Bring him here."

The Vaishnavs told the child: "Brother, Shri Gusainji is calling you." The boy immediately stood up with intense eagerness and came for the darshan of Shri Gusainji. The very moment he beheld Shri Gusainji, tears began flowing from his eyes in streams. He completely lost his composure. Shri Gusainji compassionately said: "Why are you crying now? You have reached here. Do not worry. From now onward, remain careful." Then Shri Gusainji mercifully bestowed the Name upon him.

After that, Shri Gusainji instructed a khavas: "Bathe him and bring him into the temple in a state of purity." Having given this instruction, Shri Gusainji entered the temple. After offering bhog and accepting the ceremonial betel leaf, the khavas brought the child into the temple. Shri Gusainji seated him before Shri Navneetpriyaji and performed Brahmasambandh for him.

Afterward Shri Gusainji said: "Now go outside." But the boy tightly grasped the threshold of Shri Navneetpriyaji's doorway and would not let go. Shri Gusainji said: "He has been separated for a very long time. Therefore he does not wish to leave. Let him remain here for now." So he was allowed to stand there. Later, when the doors were opened for darshan, all the Vaishnavs had darshan of Shri Navneetpriyaji. After Shri Gusainji completed the arati and began the Anosar ceremony, the temple attendant told the boy: "Come outside so that the Anosar service may proceed."

But his hands would not release the threshold. Finally, the attendant forcibly pulled him away and brought him into the courtyard. The moment he reached the courtyard, he gave up his body. Shri Gusainji understood: "He has touched the temple. This Vaishnav's soul has now reached the divine lila." Then Shri Gusainji entered that body through His own divine power, carried it outside through the Singhpor gate to a nearby well, and there withdrew His divine presence.

The body remained lying there. Seeing this, the boy's parents began weeping. Shri Gusainji said to the Brahmin: "Why do you call him your son? He was actually my own soul. Because of an offense, he had come to your house. Now he has returned to Me." The Brahmin reflected: "From birth this child possessed extraordinary bliss." The Brahmin understood the Vedas and Shastras, but he was not a divine soul. Had he been a divine soul, how could he have abandoned such bliss?

Afterward, the Brahmin returned to Kashi with his wife. Later, all the Vaishnavs living in Gokul, together with Chacha Harivanshji, humbly requested Shri Gusainji: "Maharaj, who was this Vaishnav in his previous birth?" Shri Gusainji replied: "In his previous birth, this Vaishnav was a sevak of Shri Acharyaji Mahaprabhu. He was the personal water-carrier of Shri Navneetpriyaji. By the grace of Shri Acharyaji Mahaprabhu, Shri Navneetpriyaji showed him great affection.

Such was that affection that Shri Navneetpriyaji would sit in his lap and listen to the kirtans of Parmanand Swami. It was through him that Parmanand Swami attained liberation. This is well known in the account of Parmanand Swami. But because of the greed of his tongue and attachment to taste, he fell." Then Chacha Harivanshji requested: "Maharaj, what offense did he commit?" Shri Gusainji replied: "Once he had come to Adel with a group of Vaishnavs. It was the time of Shri Navneetpriyaji's Rajbhog Arati.

Shri Acharyaji Mahaprabhu had all the Vaishnavs receive Mahaprasad. Shri Akkaji placed a small quantity of ghee, milk, and other items upon his leaf plate. When he sat down to receive Mahaprasad, he looked at his plate and thought: 'The water that I carry upon my shoulder is accepted by Shri Navneetpriyaji Himself. Then why has such a small amount been placed upon my plate today?' He even expressed this thought to Shri Akkaji.

From that very moment, Shri Navneetpriyaji no longer openly displayed the same loving affection toward him as before. As long as he remained in that body, he continued performing seva, but the Lord no longer revealed His affectionate favor. After that body was left behind, he took birth in the house of this Brahmin in Kashi. However, Shri Acharyaji Mahaprabhu is supremely compassionate. He does not dwell upon the offenses of His devotees. After giving only a small punishment, He accepted him once again. Such is the gracious nature of Shri Acharyaji Mahaprabhu. What more can be said?"

Bhav Prakash (Revealing the Sentiment): Therefore, every action should be performed only after careful consideration. It is also taught here that one who becomes controlled by the tongue and the sense of taste falls from his position. For this reason, every Vaishnav should remain vigilant.

This Vaishnav was an exceptionally blessed devotee and a recipient of Shri Gusainji's supreme grace. Therefore, how much more can truly be said about his glorious account?
